Iridium Coverage

Because of the satellite network design, Iridium covers the whole globe as its satellites travel from pole to pole.

Iridium has the most reliable, truly global mobile voice and data satellite communications network available.

The Iridium satellite-based, global wireless communications system has three components: the satellite constellation, the ground network, and subscriber products and solutions, including phones, terminals and a wide range of third-party solutions that include Iridium technology as key components.

An independent study conducted in 2008 reported that "more than 99 percent of calls placed through Iridium handsets were successfully connected compared to 51.3 percent of all calls from a competitor's handset";.*

Our reach is unparalleled and our service unrivalled.

More power, new opportunities

Anticipated to begin launching in 2015, Iridium NEXT will maintain the existing Iridium constellation architecture of 66 cross-linked satellite LEO covering 100% of the globe. Iridium NEXT will substantially enhance and extend Iridium mobile communications services, deliver:

  • Higher data speeds
  • Powerful new services and devices
  • Advantages of IP technology
  • Backward compatibility with current handsets, devices and applications

For commercial, government and scientific organizations, Iridium NEXT will also offer new business and earth observation opportunities through hosted secondary payloads on the 66 Iridium NEXT satellite.

NEXT step in performance

In February 2007, Iridium announced Iridium NEXT, a bold vision for a second-generation satellite constellation.

Iridium NEXT will give Iridium the capability to meet rapidly expanding demand for truly global mobile communications on land, at sea, and in the skies. By supporting enhanced and entirely new services for Iridium customers across a growing range of industries and geographical areas, Iridium NEXT will drive innovation in rapidly expanding areas such as:

  • Enterprise global voice and data connectivity
  • Asset tracking and other machine-to-machine (M2M) applications
  • New data-centric applications

Iridium's satellites are virtually impervious to natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes, that can damage ground-based wireless towers and terrestrial wires.

Iridium is the only connection available to many parts of the world. Even in urban and suburban environments, Iridium data solutions increasingly provide reliable backup for business communications transmissions.
